Disavow Links Tool Launched by Google!

The wait is finally over! SEOs and webmasters around the globe have been waiting for this tool for months and it is finally here. Google has announced the official launch of a new tool to disavow links- which will let webmasters get rid of poor or irrelevant or disreputable links to their site quite easily. This tool gives webmasters and SEOs the much needed instrument to protect their sites from being penalized by the Penguin update, which was rolled out in April this year and targets webspam.

The tool has been long anticipated since Matt Cutts spoke about it. And now, speaking at the Pubcon conference, Matt Cutts formally announced the tool’s launch. SEOs can try the tool from here.

Google’s tool comes in more than 3 months after Bing launched its Disavow links tool- a big surprise at the time because Google has just begun speculating about it- and within a few days, Bing launched the tool.

How to Use the Disavow Tool

Google has said that format requires the URLs to be listed in a text file from a specific site using domain: format- eg-

Then this is how Google advices to move ahead:

“An excerpt of a valid file might look like the following:

# Owner of removed most links, but missed these

In this example, lines that begin with a pound sign (#) are considered comments and Google ignores them. The “domain:” keyword indicates that you’d like to disavow links from all pages on a particular site (in this case, “”). You can also request to disavow links on specific pages (in this case, three individual pages on We currently support one disavowal file per site and the file is shared among site owners in Webmaster Tools. If you want to update the file, you’ll need to download the existing file, modify it, and upload the new one. The file size limit is 2MB.”

The links will be disavowed in some time- roughly several weeks. Google has added that it may not use the submissions if it finds them untrustworthy. Also, Matt Cutts said that the ideal route for webmasters would be to initially try to remove the links by asking the webmasters of the sites to remove them and only then use the disavow tool.

This tool will be a huge help to webmasters hoping to revive their sites after the Penguin update. The update came down upon sites with spammy links pointing to them and this led to a widespread panic among SEOs about negative SEO. The frequent link warnings released by Google were also adding to the pressure. That is why this tool will now help SEOs get control of their sites once again. Google Updates Google+ Local Rating – Review Scale!

Now users can review a place on Google Maps as: "poor – fair," “good,” “very good,” or "excellent".
As announced on Google+, Google’s Megan Stevenson said that they have rolled out the updated rating scale which allows for giving easier and highly accurate reviews. Her post said- "It’s easier than ever to write accurate, useful reviews on Google+ Local, thanks to the updated rating scale we rolled out. If you want to rate the food at a restaurant, or the quality of a mechanic, just choose: "poor – fair," “good,” “very good,” or "excellent".

The new rating given by a user is then converted by Google into numbers and then used for the business' precise 30-point score which comes up in Google+, Search and Maps.

Google Releases Rich Snippets Guidelines!

Google has always stressed on the importance it places on rich snippets while placing a site’s page on its search results. The search engine has illustrated time and again that rich snippets that summarize the content of a page by using structured data markup have a much better shot at being placed high in search results. Moving in the same direction, Google has launched a new set of guidelines that will allow webmaster to create a structured data markup for rich snippets.

As Google said, “Once you've correctly added structured data markup to you site, rich snippets are generated algorithmically based on that markup. If the markup on a page offers an accurate description of the page's content, is up-to-date, and is visible and easily discoverable on your page and by users, our algorithms are more likely to decide to show a rich snippet in Google’s search results.”

The search engine also warned that in case webmasters create spammy or incorrect snippets, the bots will filter and ignore the markup. Google also added that they may also manually disable rich snippets for a site abusing these snippets. Google will consider it spammy if a retailer has general store reviews on the page and not the specific product’s reviews. You can find more information at the Help Center.

Google Confirms Release of the 20th Panda Update: Panda 20 is Out!

On September 27th, Google rolled out what they call as the 20th Panda update which is a major rollout as compared to the refreshes released in the last few months. This update is said to impact 2.4% of English search terms. 
Webmasters noticed the rankings slip over the weekend and earlier it was thought that the EMD update was responsible for it. But later it was confirmed by Google to Search Engine Land that a new Panda algorithm update has been rolled out which “affects about 2.4% of English queries to a degree that a regular user might notice.”
Google has also said that they will continue rolling updates for this Panda algorithm and Matt Cutts, head of Google’s Webspam team has been quoted in the media as saying, “Google began rolling out a new update of Panda on Thursday, 9/27. This is actually a Panda algorithm update, not just a data update. A lot of the most-visible differences went live Thursday 9/27, but the full rollout is baking into our index and that process will continue for another 3-4 days or so. This update affects about 2.4% of English queries to a degree that a regular user might notice, with a smaller impact in other languages (0.5% in French and Spanish, for example).”

Google Updates Webmaster Guidelines!

This is an important piece of news for all webmasters. Google has announced that they have released and updated version of their Webmaster Quality Guidelines. As per Google, the updated quality guidelines have many more articles on specific issues like links schemes etc. The entire information directory is updated so that webmasters can create websites that are in line with what Google expects to be followed in terms of quality standards.

As the search engine giant said, “the main message of our quality guidelines hasn’t changed: Focus on the user. However, we’ve added more guidance and examples of behavior that you should avoid in order to keep your site in good standing with Google’s search results. We’ve also added a set of quality and technical guidelines for rich snippets, as structured markup is becoming increasingly popular.”

Now Get Google & Bing Weather Reports with Volatility Index!

Shortly after the MozCast Tool for weather reports on Google, has introduced a SERPs Volatility Index to keep track of any fluctuations that come in search results. The tool will inform webmasters of any algorithmic rollouts made by both the search engines: Google and Bing. MozCast tracks just Google whereas with SERPs you get to keep an eye on both Google and Bing.

Matt Cutts Explains New Notifications about Inbound Links!

The past few weeks have seen a lot of discussion about link notifications or link advisories sent by Google. The head of Google’s Web Spam team, Matt Cutts, has explained the new link notifications being sent to webmasters.
Original Link Messages 
Matt wrote that Google sends notifications, if it spots unnatural links pointing to a site (link spamming for a long period). The action in this case required to be taken by webmasters is- “If your site is notified for these unnatural links, we recommend removing as many of the spammy or low-quality links as you possibly can and then submitting a reconsideration request for your site.”
New Link Messages 
These are sent for certain spammy or artificial links. In this case not the entire site, but only those links are discredited by Google. Matt wrote, “The new messages make it clear that we are taking "targeted action on the unnatural links instead of your site as a whole." The new messages also lack the yellow exclamation mark that other messages have, which tries to convey that we're addressing a situation that is not as severe as the previous "we are losing trust in your entire site" messages.”
Pay Attention to these new link messages
Matt wrote that these messages are a clear communication from Google about their ‘distrust’ in some links pointing to the site. These are the ‘artificial links’ that Google distrusts- “widgetbait, paid links, blog spam, guestbook spam, excessive article directory submissions, excessive link exchanges, other types of linkspam, etc.”
There is no need to panic
Matt also said, that these messages are for a heads up and not downright panic. He wrote, “I don't want site owners to panic. We do use this message some of the time for innocent sites where people are pointing hacked anchor text to their site to try to make them rank for queries like [buy viagra].”
Action Plan after getting new link messages
Matt wrote that at the moment new link messages have been sent to some 20,000 domains – which is only a tenth of the usual number of domains contacted monthly. Since Google plans to send these messages retroactively to sites, everyday 10 sites are likely to get the message. Matt wrote, “We recently launched the ability to download backlinks to your site sorted by date. If you get this new link message, you may want to check your most recent links to spot anything unusual going on. If you discover that someone in your company has been doing widgetbait, paid links, or serious linkspam, it's worth cleaning that up and submitting a reconsideration request. We're also looking at some ways to provide more concrete examples to make these messages more actionable and to help narrow down where to look when you get one.”

Google Webmaster Tools now makes it possible to download the newest links to your site, as discovered by Google. This new feature was brought to light by Barry Schwartz of SE Roundtable. Marissa Mayer is the New Yahoo! CEO!

Marissa Mayer is the new president and CEO of Yahoo. Yahoo gave out a press release announcing her appointment as the next ‘Chief Yahoo!”. Marissa Mayer had been a part of Google’s core team for the past 13 years and she resigned from her post at Google over the telephone. She has gone on to become the fifth CEO Yahoo! has seen in the past 5 years.
Marissa has gained distinction in designing and execution of technology products. And this is why Yahoo! considers her ideal for the post. As Fred Amoroso, Chairman of the Board of Directors ay Yahoo! said- “The Board of Directors unanimously agreed that Marissa’s unparalleled track record in technology, design, and product execution makes her the right leader for Yahoo! at this time of enormous opportunity.”

She shared the news on Twitter too as well as the news that she is expecting a baby boy soon (in the fall- will Yahoo! have to arrange for an interim person in charge while she is away?):

Marissa has worked at several key positions during her time at Google and has headed top products like Google Local, Maps, and Images. Mayer said on her new position, “I am honored and delighted to lead Yahoo!, one of the internet’s premier destinations for more than 700 million users. I look forward to working with the Company’s dedicated employees to bring innovative products, content, and personalized experiences to users and advertisers all around the world.”
Marissa is known for her success in creating user-centered product designs and that is why she seems the right person to take Yahoo! products to the top. Marissa has a huge challenge before her as she has to get back Yahoo! on track, something that the past 4 CEOs have been unsuccessfully trying to do over the years. Here is a list of Yahoo CEOs:

iGoogle to retire in November, 2012!

Google has decided to discontinue iGoogle from 1 November, 2012. The search engine giant earlier announced about closing down of its several services as part of its spring cleaning in summer program.


iGoogle, that allow users to add features like news, weather, mail and many other was once Google's fastest growing product. The official reason provided over the announcement is that, "with modern apps that run on platforms like Chrome and Android, the need for iGoogle has eroded over time".

 However, it has also been announced by Google that it will shut Google Mini later this month. The search engine giant has already shut Google Talk Chatback recommending people to use Meebo instead. Google videos stopped storing videos in 2009. It will allow to move the already present Google videos of users to YouTube till 20 August, 2012. Google will soon discontinue Symbian Search application.

Blekko Updates SEO Data with Fresher Index!

The Slashtag Search Engine-Blekko has upgraded their SEO data. This means that the crawler and indexer will now provide latest and fresher results to SEOs search for SEO data. The search engine has announced that after this update, their data will be more comprehensive too.

The search engine said that moving ahead with their motto of wanting “to enable people to see the Internet the way a search engine sees it, especially what the rest of the internet is saying about an url”, has led to them upgrading their crawler- Scoutjet.

As Blekko said, “Scoutjet updates the top ranked starting pages on the Internet around every hour, while other high quality pages are checked at least every week. The continuous updates to blekko’s SEO data include page content, meta data, duplicate text, and inbound link counts. Staying up-to-date is as much about forgetting the old as finding the new. Blekko has gained popularity among the search professionals for its effectiveness as a backlinks research tool which it offers as a part of its set of free SEO tools.

Google Panda Update 3.7 Rolled Out on June 8th!

A Panda refresh 3.7 was on the role last weekend and the news has been confirmed by Google. The refresh began on June 8th and affected less than 1% of search queries in the US and about 1% global queries. 

It was just a data refresh of the Google Panda algorithm and there were no algorithm changes. SEO forums were abuzz with discussions about the update with webmasters commenting about their rankings. Some were complaining about the lost rankings, but most said the refresh had no effect on the position of their websites.
Panda update 3.6 happened on April 27 and 3.7 have come a bit more than a month after it. 3.6 were a limited update as well which did not affect many sites.

Matt Cutts on Penguin Update, Negative SEO, Rejecting Links!

Matt Cutts, head of Google’s web spam team, took the stage on SMX Advanced 2012 in a session titled ‘You and A with Matt Cutts.’ The session kicked off with a spoof video that answered that one essential question about ‘how to rank no. 1 on Google’. Here is the spoof video:

Matt then spoke on some important SEO issues including the Penguin, the Panda and Linking practices.
  1. Penguin or Panda are not manual penalties- Penguin is designed to attack “the stuff in the middle;” between good content and spam. Panda was designed for nuking spam. Matt said, “It does demote web results, but it’s an algorithmic change, not a penalty. It’s yet another signal among over 200 signals we look at.”  
  2. Reconsideration Requests will work only when you submit them after receiving a warning. Matt said, “People who think it should rank higher after Penguin can let us know and we can look at it, and in a couple of instances, it actually helped us make a couple of tweaks to the algorithm.”
  3. Negative SEO and disowning links- Google is probably considering this option of disowning links and Cutts acknowledged the fact that negative SEO is a major concern among people. Google accepts the possibility of negative SEO, but categorizes it as difficult. May be within a few months it will enable disavowing links.
  4. Google on buying links- Google catches on to paid links quite early. As Cutts said, “People don’t realize, when you buy links, you might think you’re very careful, that you have no footprints, but you may be getting into business with someone who’s not as careful. People need to realize as we build new tools, it becomes a higher-risk endeavor.”
  5. SEOs have a tough road ahead- As per Cutts, SEO may get more difficult. The past 7 years have been considerably challenging for SEOs and as per Matt, the search professionals must prepare themselves for tougher times ahead.
  6. Google does not hate SEO- Matt Cutts further clarified that Google does not hate SEO, only the black hat ones, engaged in buying and selling links. He said, “There are people who continue to sell links, although they don’t do any good, and that’s part of how Search Engine Optimization O has a bad reputation.”
He also said- Google is not waging a war against SEOs, but against spam.

Post Google Penguin Link Building Tips!

The World Wide Web is buzzing with ideas and advice to rise back again after being pecked by the Penguin. Webmasters are contemplating on ways to beat the Penguin and we have been discussing for ways of Penguin recovery too.

More than two weeks after the Penguin update (targeted at ‘unnatural links’), it is believed that the top way to stay ahead is to indulge in smart and somewhat technical link building. Nearly 70% of Webmasters have been hit by the Penguin as the links they had built over the years are now pulling them down.

PenguinBut you can move ahead after the Penguin too. Here are the Post Penguin link building practices we suggest:

1)    Check if domain is cached in Google. Google “” to see the date of the last crawl and cache.

2)    Check the websites the domain is linking out to. If it is linking to an overwhelming number, then the link is not juicy enough for you. Also, it is important to see the types of site they are linking to. If they link to relevant and quality sites, then you are good to go.

3)    Check the site’s ranking in Google. What does it rank in Google for? You can use tools to check the domain’s ranking history too. The idea is to go ahead only if the site has a decent position in Google, and ranks for a high number of keywords.

4)    Check the rankings of the site linked with the domain. If you plan to link with the domain, you need to know how the websites with outgoing links rank. This is an important quality check of the link that you must see.

5)    Check the content of the domain. You have to get links from quality sites with relevant, quality content. So you must do a random check of 2 or 3 articles for duplicity and quality writing. You do not want links from poor quality- keyword stuffed content. The Penguin hates that. You can check for duplicate content by using Copyscape and Google.

6)    Check if the site falls among dropped domains. Before approaching a site, check for “ + expired” and see the results if the domain is expired. There are link builders who snatch these domains and start their paid links business. Do not go ahead with such a domain.

7)    Check the location of the links. You must look for links passed from the content and not footer or sitewide links. The Penguin may penalize you for this. So, stick to domains with links from within the content.

These are some of the link building practices that can save you from showing up in the Penguin’s radar.
